Biologic Maximum

Our second planting of the hayfield food plot in the spring of 2006 is Biologic Maximum.

Maximum is a blend of New Zealand brassicas, I hope they like the dirt here in the good old USA.

Over the spring we had limed, sprayed Round-Up and disked on several occasions. The hay in this area of the plot was a little tough to get rid of. We planted the Maximum on May 28th after disking, adding an additional 50 pounds of lime and 19-19-19 fertilizer. I’m not sure exactly how much lime was applied to this plot since we had originally planned to plant a larger plot , but it was probably quite a bit since this was the area where we made a turn each time we limed.

Both before and after sowing the seed we dragged the plot with bedsprings since the brassica seed was real small and we didn’t want to burry it too deep.

The Maximum grew well in this plot but the deer didn't touch it until late August. During the last two weeks of August the deer almost cleaned the plot out. During these same two weeks they also started eating the Tecomate Ultra Forage adjacent to this plot. With this spring planting we had hoped to provide some antler growing nutrition for the bucks but fell short, or long, of this goal depending on how you want to look at it. It did provide some good nutrition in late August when the clover plots started to show the effects of a dry summer.

We'll likely not plant Maximum in the spring again.

On Labor Day we planted part of the oldhouse food plot in Maximum after disking, fertilizing and liming. This ground worked up real nice so we just use the ATV's to push the seed into the soft ground. We'll see how it grows in the fall and when the deer find it attractive. Hopefully it will make for a good bow hunting plot.
