May 15th Food Plot Update

The garden food plot was planted on April 24th and now, three weeks later, the clover is starting to give the plot a green tint. There are some areas where the grass and weeds are making a run for it also, but hopefully the clover will come on strong after the rain that we have had the last couple of days. I have not usually had my plots planted before May in the past and it seems that this plot is starting a little slower than the others have. It may be due to the earlier planting date. Before, the plots were usually not planted until mid to late May. It will be interesting to see how this one progresses.

I mowed the middle clearing plot and the whippoorwill plot. Both of these plots have a lot of grass and are maybe half clover. After mowing, the clover may jump up and take off and the overseeded clover should be coming on soon. We will watch these two plots closely, right now they are the likely candidates to get disked up and planted again this fall. This would mean that they only lasted one and a half years. I would like to get more time out of an annual seed but they get used pretty heavily. I am also thinking about adding another plot in another area.

Middle Clearing Food Plot After Mowing

The old corn patch plot had been mowed last week and had grown a lot already. I mowed a path with the brush hog and another with the garden tractor. I will be able to compare the effects on the clover of these two mowers as well as not having mowed it at all on our next visit. This plot is 60 or 70% clover and nice and green. Once again we saw deer in the plot in the evening.

The plot at the old house is still going strong even though it looks as though it is being grazed down. I put a small circular fence in it to see how much they are eating. This plot will really be nice when the overseed jumps up.

I am thinking about trying some method of keeping the deer out of the plots in some areas. I’ll let you know what I have done, if anything, in the next update.
