Tecomate Monster MixThe food plot we planted this seed blend in has been a food plot for several years and was last planted with a brassica mix last fall. We started disking in late March, applied 200 pound of lime and 30 pound of 19-19-19 fertilizer. 200 pound of lime is just under a ton of lime per acre for this small plot. We disked on April 24th and planted. After planting we ran over the plot with our ATV’s. This plot jumped up and grew nice into early summer. For a while in the early summer it was the best plot we had. As the summer progressed the deer used the plot heavily and the grass and weed competition came on. We mowed the plot twice over the summer and finally used some Arrest grass herbicide in late August. The grass died off in the fall and the clover and chicory were visible amongst the fall leaves.
On August 22nd we extended our hayfield food plot and used the remainder of the Monster Mix that we had left over from the spring. It has been dry since we planted but we have noticed that the chicory had jumped up to about three inches after three weeks, whereas the clover hasn’t grown much thus far. I expect this plot to get established this fall and then come on strong next spring. It is planted alongside some Durana clover so we’ll be able to compare the progress of these two seeds. So far we’ve been happy with the performance of this seed blend.
