November 20th Deer Season JournalI headed to the treestand that I put up the last time we bowhunted. I'd hoped that I might catch a buck traveling through the thick brush that is below the oldhouse food plot. I arrived and got settled by 7:10 and at about 7:30 a couple of deer came running from either around the opposite hillside or up out of the hollow. As they came I could hear grunting so it looked like I was going to have some excitement, but they hung up about 80 yards or so to my right. They mingled around over there for a while and then came my way but worked their way in below me in more thick brush. I headed to check a couple cameras and after checking the second one I noticed a button buck about 60 yards away. It had to have been there while I was checking the camera. I have no idea how it didn't see me and run. After watching it for close to half an hour I headed back to the ATV. About noon Ryan and I set up a blind at the far end of our property. Through our binoculars we watched some hunters across the hollow haul out a buck but we didn't see anything except one squirrel. At about 3:00 PM we set up the other blind in the open woods below our hayfield food plots and I stayed to see what might show up. At 4:15 a young eight point buck showed up. He was walking along the trail that we had set up the blind on and approached to within 10 yards. I was surprised he came that close. It was fun getting a chance to see him. I think this is the buck that walked up on me.
My brother-in-law spent the morning in the woods at the end of the hayfield and saw a five point buck. In the evening he jumped a buck that headed over the hill before he was able to get a good look at it. It wasn't a record breaking opening day but I was glad to get to see that small eight point after the few buck sightings I'd had during bow season.
