October 9th Whitetail Deer PhotographsAs you might expect this set of pictures has shown us that the bucks have all shed their velvet. We did capture a couple pictures of a spike with one clean spike and velvet still hanging loosely on the other. One picture is included below. We also had a picture of a young buck whose spikes still had the blood red tint on them. It has been funny how our two largest bucks are in the same small area. It will be interesting to see what happens as the rut draws closer. I'm not sure how well they'll tolerate each other. The nine point was a seven point last year that we caputured with our game cameras in several different locations, but for some reason he has stopped wondering. It will be interesting to see if he expands his territory during the rut. I'm still not sure of the identity of the larger eight point. I have my suspicions that he may be an older buck we have been watching for four years but I'm still not sure. We did get a couple of pictures of two young bucks in a shoving match. Unfortunately they were so small that it was hard to tell they were bucks so the picture did not make the cut. Bow season opens up next week and we plan on spending some time in our stands. I would like to get a look at one of the larger bucks to see for myself just how big or small they actually are. A nice doe to take a shot at would be good as well, but you can't beat seeing the first buck of the season. The game cameras are great but you can't beat a face to face encounter. It's an exciting time of the year. Each time we gather our cameras we never know what may be on them. These pictures were taken with our Trail Watcher 2060 and Trail Watcher 2040.
