Although our website took a couple years off the black bears didn't. Looking back we see that we photographed out first black bear in 2007 and every year since.
We got another picture of a black bear this week. He didn't want to show his face. I'm far from a black bear expert, but he looks like a pretty husky fellow. Thankfully he didn't tear anything up this week although we did have a feeder on the ground. The problem is that we can't figure out what happened. It's a mystery.
We heard about a neighbor across the hollow who reported that a black bear had taken out four deer feeders and a trail camera. We've been down that road and now have our feeders hanging from a cable between two trees. In almost two years our feeders have been left alone until a couple of weeks ago. Somehow a bear got one of our feeders off the hanger and took it about 70 yards over the hill. Fortunately it wasn't destroyed and we put it back up added some duct tape to keep the chains on the hanger and couldn't really figure out how the bear got it off in the first place.
Last week we got four pictures, three of which are posted below. Two are in the same location from the same camera and you have to look at them close to tell them apart. See what you think.
This bear showed up shortly after we were at this location. This is the second time that has happened. Maybe he's checking to see if we left him something to eat.
Our neighbor got a look at one in his garden. We assume it's the same bear. It would have been fun and a little nerve wracking all at the same time if we were sitting in the deer condo as he strolled by.
On a visit in July we saw that our feed containers had been moved and we were pretty sure one of them had tooth marks in it. We also noticed that the mineral block at the old house had been knocked over again. Then I found bear tracks in a muddy spot along the old road. Here he is walking past one of our mineral licks.
We thought we may have a visiting bear again this year when, after putting out some new minerals, the mineral blocks had been move. Now, these mineral blocks had been out for over a year and had never been moved and one was still pretty heavy. Our neighbor reported that a tripod feeder was missing. A few weeks later our sweet feed containers started to move around as well. So, our response was to put out four cameras and see what was happening.
Here is the culprit. I had to move the little shed about 20 feet back up to where it had been.
Take a look at all of our 2018 Black Bear Pictures.
