PA Coyote

This photo was taken in May of 2007. We had just moved to a new home in the area where both my husband and I grew up. We were sitting in the living room and I saw something walking by the window. I excitedly said to my husband "look, look, there is a fox." My husband told me that it was not a fox, it was a coyote. I had never seen a coyote. I immediately grabbed the camera and started snapping photos through the house windows. I have 3 dogs in the house and they were barking like crazy. The coyote heard the dogs barking and stopped for just a moment to turn around and look my direction. He paused just long enough for me to get this "once in a lifetime" photo. We often hear coyotes, but we haven't seen one since that day in May 2007.

My husband just saw a coyote chasing twin fawns across our property. The mama deer was attacking the coyote. My husband went after them with a gun, and chased the coyote back into the woods. We've heard them over the hill from us, but have never this close before.

Chased by a coyote NEW
by: Anonymous

I was walking my dogs through several fields at Tyler Park in May, 2014 and what I thought was a german shepard jumped out of the woods with a bark. As he/she started coming towards me I realized it was a coyote. I started to quicken my step and start yelling but this animal was not stopped by it and was trotting towards me with a pretty fast clip. I let my dogs off the leash at this point because I was terrified and my younger dog, who was larger than the coyote went after it and barked, running in circles around it. This stopped the coyote and he turned around and went back into the woods. He came after me several more times and my dog repeatedly chased him off. As I entered the next field I looked to my left and there he was staring at me. I was amazed at the speed and distance he traveled without me seeing him. My dog again chased the coyote as he was advancing on me. I was terrified at the nerve and persistance of this animal. I called the park rangers and they told me there may have been a den and they were protecting babies. They did not seemed too concerned. I walk in fear everyday I am there but it will not stop me. I go with 2-big dogs and a stick. Having grown up with a large coyote population in Central Washington I was familiar with them. But, this was much bigger and aggressive than anything I had ever seen.

eyes wide open in Richland NEW
by: Linda

May, 2014. My Husband, and son were walking in the woods in Richlandtown, when they came across a pair of big coyote chasing a deer in circles. The other deer had run off, but this deer was the one they were going to kill. it was totally exhausted, so exhausted that it ran behind my husband and son to catch its breath. They screamed at the coyotes and chased them away. In the thirty years that we have lived here I have never seen a coyote on our property. About 20 years ago my Husband and I saw a lone coyote up in Durham. Now I'm leery about walking my old dog through the woods. Could she protect me and could I protect her ! Think I will stay in the yard, and not go in the woods till I get my confidence back :(

Coyote siting NEW
by: Joanna

We live in a condo development in Montgomeryville, PA that has a large wooded area. Our condo backs up to the woods and we feed a large colony of feral cats outside our unit. Now that it's gotten very cold the wildlife is coming out of the woods in search of food. This morning I looked out the window and saw a scruffy coyote eating the dry cat food along with one of the feral cats. So they are here along with the red foxes, deer, and other wildlife. Fortunately, many people who live in this community feed the feral cats and other wildlife who need our help to survive the cold winter weather.

Coyote Sighting in Buck Valley, PA NEW
by: David

I have a weekend house in Buck Valley, PA, just a few miles shy of Breezewood off I70. We keep a camera on the tree in the yard to track when the deer are coming in. Every weekend we switch out the card to view what happened the previous week. What a shock! A coyote posing for the camera, right in the back yard at 2 am! They're spooky looking animals too, and I've since learned they can be quite vicious! The locals had been telling us there are plenty around and recounted stories of watching them gang up on fawns, grabing cats, and such. A conversation with our neighbor produced an even better shot from his tree camera at 1 in the afternoon! Needless to say, our cat just became an indoor cat and the beagles are now restricted to the yard for sniffing. No more woodland excursions!

coyote, maybe NEW
by: Anonymous

This morning in the fog as I pulled out of my driveway, I saw a deer in my backyard which is very common. Then I noticed it was a weird deer; it was short and stocky and had a long tail but it was white underneath. I then had lunch with a friend who told me about her grandson shooting a coyote. A lightbulb went off in my head. I know we have coyotes in the woods behind our home but I've never seen one. Until now...maybe. I live in suburban Harrisburg, too, about 2 miles from the mall. Of course, my husband thinks I'm delusional. I'm hoping for bigfoot next!

Outside this morning at about 530am in Skippack PA letting the pup out. A coyote, roughly the height of my akita, but less than half his weight quickly ran just behind my yard. It captured my Akitas attention but he seemed to be in shock. He went crazily sniffing and marking after... We were both amazed at this slender fast wild animal...

I live aprox 2 miles from Barkleyville, PA and saw my first coyote 5 min. ago. I didn't think about snapping a picture until I got my cat back in the house. At first I thought it was a good sized dog, possibly part German Shepard. Wow.....I knew they were around, but didn't expect to see one surveying my cat!

Zionsville Coyotes
by: Jay

Recently moved to Zionsville Pa in Berks County. I've yet to see a Coyote yet, but I hear the yelps and howls of Coyotes on a regular basis in the woods around my house. Tried hunting them twice with no luck yet. I am also concerned since I have two goats behind a five foot fence in which I feel are sitting ducks.

CATS&DOGS V COYOTE
by: Anonymous

oh yes!! a coyote hates dogs,in some states dogs are used to hunt them,not to kill them but to chase till the coyote turns and chases the dog back,the dog then runs past the hunter in doing so gives him a shot to kill..few miles from my home a lab was drug out of its yard by 2 coyotes,it had a shock collar on so not only was it in pain from the coyote but being shocked also..the owner heard it and saved his dog.. needless to say when their hungry they will come to easy food!! and your cat is one of its favorites:}

2 coyotes spotted
by: Steve

I live in Stowe, PA. small town west of Pottstown, PA Montgomery County. Around 2PM, I heard a rustle in leaves on the west side of my property. When turning the corner of my home low and behold, 2 very large coyotes scrambled up the hill to a vacant field west of me. I waited few min. and climbed the hill and one of them was sitting not 30 feet from me. I was downwind and could not smell me and quite enough not to spook it. This bugger was not in any way small!!! Min. 35-45lbs. It was sitting as if waiting for the other to return. Thought---- CAMERA!!!---- When turning to get one from the house I rustled leaves and it took off faster than----well you know--- What a shocker---- and in no way did they look hungry----very well fed----and this a residential/commercial area.

I do believe that they could attack a dog. I heard of a lady about 25 miles from my home that had a coyote come into her yard as she was gardening and grah her dog. There was nothing that she could do to help her dog.

Saw my first coyote
by: Anonymous

As I was walking my border collie in the woods today, I saw my first coyote. Initially I thought it was a German Shephard, then I realized
it had to be a coyote. When I got home, I got on the internet, saw your photo, and realized I definitely saw a coyote (I even thought it might
have been a wolf it was so large). Would they
attack a dog?

It was the approximate size of a German Shephard, my first thought was that it was a wolf. I grew up in rural PA and know what a fox looks like but I had never seen a coyote before now.

coyote's size and weight?

John,
I am not sure of the size and weight of the coyote. I would compare it to one of my dogs and he weighs approx. 30#, but I am not really good at judging size and weight of animals.
Thanks,

Coyote In Harrisburg
by: Jane

Sitting outside in front of my home at 6:30 AM on a cool July morning drinking my coffee and through the yard accross the street saw something smaller than a deer and went to get a closer look. It was a coyote. A coyote ... in an area just outside of Harrisburg, 2 miles from the mall ... bold as you please. It loped through my yard and into the wooded area behind my home. Thanks for the picture it helped me to identify it.
